The Real
Legend

The real-life Kitasan Black (foaled March 10, 2012) is one of the highest-earning Japanese racehorses in history. Owned by Ono Shoji and closely associated with the famous enka singer Saburo Kitajima, he became a massive fan favorite during his racing career.

Known for his robust health, incredible cruising speed, and resilience, he rarely missed a major race. After retiring in a blaze of glory by winning the Arima Kinen in 2017, he has gone on to become a highly successful sire — most notably, father of the phenomenal Equinox, who dominated the global racing scene.

Stud Legacy

Retired to Shadai Stallion Station, Kitasan Black quickly proved himself as a sire. His son Equinox won both the Autumn Tenno Sho and Arima Kinen — mirroring his father's final campaign. Sol Oriens captured the 2023 Satsuki Sho and Croix du Nord the 2025 Japanese Derby — both races Kitasan Black himself could never win, completing the legacy through his children.

In retirement, Kitasan Black was famously known for challenging horses in adjacent pastures to race along the fences — staying so fit that his caretakers resorted to heavier horseshoes (which only made him stronger). They eventually used this to their advantage, placing overweight horses nearby so Kitasan would run them into shape.
